History

The West End of Halifax has long been heralded as one of the busiest shopping districts in the province, beginning with the infamous Simpson’s mail-order service centre, which operated from 1919 – 2000. History buffs will appreciate the chance to visit Mount Olive Cemetery, which is home to a burial site for victims of the RMS Titanic sinking (1912) and the Halifax Explosion (1917). In 1931, an airfield known as Chebucto Field was the chosen location for the Halifax Civic Airport, which served as the city’s main airport until 1942. Today the airfield is marked by Saunders Park Monument, within minutes of West22.

The history of the building site points to John Leckie, who emigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1861 to sell commercial fish netting of all types. As stated on the website for Leckie’s Lakefish Net and Twine, “The company he founded prospered, working gradually into the marine and commercial finishing hardware business. In 1908 it was purchased by The Linen Thread Co. Ltd., of Glasgow, Scotland but the name John Leckie Limited, by this time well known and highly respected, was retained.” The company has been in business for 160 years and has expanded its operations across the country.
